Beautiful Seal Matrix

01 Nov 2019

My friend and I were given permission to search a field in Lincolnshire that has been earmarked for housing development. The field is presently used for growing crops until building starts. We arrived early on Sunday 20th October 2019 having driven over 100 miles from home as we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to detect in historic Lincolnshire. At around midday using my CTX3030 with small coil I got a lovely signal and from around 6 inches down flipped out at instantly recognised artefact that is a real bucket lister for me.....a 13th Century bronze seal matrix used when sealing documents and letters with wax. The seal is oval and has a six sided shaft and loop it shows a hunting dog and is believed to have the hunting cry for fallow deer. At the time hunters shouted ‘Soho Robin’ sort of like shouting Tally Ho these days. I can make out SOHOV for Soho but the second word is still being researched but is something like ‘Demiel’ or similar. The seal is in perfect condition and one of my favourite finds of recent years!
