Heritage Interviews

31 Mar 2011

I’m proud to introduce a new series of interviews, which will be hosted on MLOtv. These interviews are brought to you in collaboration with Minelab metal detectors.

The concept is simple; we travel to finders of important discoveries and interview them for MLOtv. The first of these interviews will be of British finders, but it’s our intention to expand this series worldwide.

The first in the series was aired last year, and featured the finder of the Frome hoard, Dave Crisp. Dave found a pot of Roman coins in a Somerset field in the south of England. This massive hoard of 52,503 coins consisted of mainly bronzes, but also included some extremely rare silver coins of the Roman British emperor Carausius. Silver coins of Carausius are extremely rare and are worth many thousands of pounds (£) each. So it wasn’t surprising the whole hoard was finally valued £320,250 by the treasure valuation committee. This reward, once raised by the museum, will be split equally between the finder and landowner.

The second interview is with the finders of the Dorset silver Stater hoard. Dave Eagles, John Earley and David Grenfell were detecting on a club site in 2010 when they made their discovery, and they tell us how it was only Minelab machines that were successful on the day. The coins were dated to 50 BC and were minted by the Durotrigan Celtic tribe, who were in control of southern Britain prior to the Roman invasion. All three finders are members of the award winning Stour Valley search and recovery club.

The next interview, that will follow shortly, is with Carl Warmsley the finder of an Iron Age (Celtic) grave. In the Iron Age it was often the custom to bury important people with their possessions to use in the afterlife. What made Carl’s discovery so important was the quality of the burial goods, which included a very rare ornate mirror. So remember to tune-in and watch this amazing interview, only on MLOtv.com.

There will be further interviews to follow, some already in production, others in the planning stage. So please keep checking for new video clips on MLOtv.com.

If you have a story to share, or know of someone who has, please contact MLOtv.com.
