Viking coin treasure

28 Oct 2018

I think most of the good finds I have made are when leaving the site and walking back to the car. I always swing until I get to the car; you never know what you might find. Last August this is just what happened, a single coin was found and seen to be special. Mental plans were made to come back the next day to see if there were more - there were more, 255 coins to be exact, dating from around 825-850 AD. The museum was contacted and that first day around 57 coins were found by the 3 man team. The next day, the total of coins was 175. All this done by just seeking over the grass, the museum now called a halt to the hunt to arrange for an excavation and removal of the turf and a subsequent search of the soil beneath. Here in October - the 24th to be precise, the hunt restarted. After 2 days of coil swinging, the total count was 255. The first 2 coins were found with a Minelab X-Terra 305 and a Minelab X-Terra 705. These coins, which only 10 - 11 were known worldwide, has rewritten Danish history regarding the striking and use of this very early coinage. The survey finished a few days ago and as soon as the mounds of removed turf and soil have been bulldozed back into place, our now 3 man team will quite possibly find a handful more of these now not so seldom coins.
