Things that make you go "hmmmm"

06 Jul 2017

Extremely dry conditions in and around the area in the area that I live, and currently not able to detect any yard permissions. I have been working a street tear out in "small town" Iowa. There has been some bared fruit of labor, but very minimal. On July 2nd, I went out for an early evening swing, and upon arrival at the location I noticed newly exposed ground. The street had been dug out 2-3 foot lower in places than what it had been before, down to the original brick streets from many days past. The new exposure was in the area where the street and easements used to meet.

I put the stock coil on my E-TRAC in the vertical position in order to swing on the "new" dirt wall. I got a faint and repeatable 12-46, pulled out my pinpointer and checked the area of concentrated signal. Pinpointer confirmed target, but nothing visible. I whittle back the dirt with a first good chunk of dirt and it fell to the ground. Checked the ground with my E-TRAC, nothing, checked the original signal area, stronger 12-46, used my pinpointer, signal. The new exposure also created a lip, got down on my knees to visually see what was giving the signal. Target acquired, I could see part of silver rim that was reeded. In my mind I am thinking a quarter, popped it, bigger than a quarter, thinking half dollar now. I pop the wet dirt on the coin to try and get an ID. Not recognizing the design, thinking maybe now a big token, pop the wet dirt on the opposite side, no idea. I could decipher some of the inscriptions, Googled what is stamped on the coin when I got home.

In small town Iowa I had unearthed a 1915 Silver Cuban Cuarenta Centavos ! Never know where and what you will find, this hobby is amazing!
