The Sun King and the Castle

24 Feb 2021

I had been awarded the privilege to roam around the astonishing private property of a friend close to the center of the village I used to live. The terrain is just next to the "Governor's House", a 17th century building complex, turned into a boarding school in the 1910's, and now unfortunately in ruins. A Pedro Almodovar movie was shot at this location. After a slow morning I had my lunch overlooking the Disney palace like tower, and decided to try my luck further up the hill. After digging some trash, a faint but clear 19 signal popped up. After digging not too deep, this tiny coin came out, and looked like struck just yesterday. The coin is a copper "diner" from 1648, struck in Barcelona, so Spain, but has the image of "the Sun King", Louis XIV of France on it. During the period of the Catalan upheaval, that part of Catalonia became part of France after the "Guerra dels Segadors" (Reapers war or Catalan Revolt). Louis XIV became the Count of Barcelona, besides being the King of France, and hence his head on the coin. The coin is relatively common, but certainly not in this condition: that day I must have been blessed by a ray of Royal Sun light.
