The Genesis of the Addiction

22 Aug 2019

A number of years ago, I cashed in some credit card points on a very low-end detector. It sat in the closet untouched for 2-3 years, then I pulled it out to help locate some property pins for both of our properties. After locating them, he asked if I thought we might be able to locate something he had lost while shooting some clay pigeons with another uncle. We tired, but the ‘mono tone’ was hitting anything metal in the ground, mostly shell casings and some lead. After doing some research on how to do a better job of detecting, I purchased a little better detector that would allow some discrimination along with Target ID numbers & Tones. What we were looking for was a solid brass inlay that had fallen off of his shotgun. It had been lost nearly 15 years, but when we scanned over the area again, among all the spent shell cases that were still there. When we hit the inlay, it rang out loud and proud! When he pulled the plug apart, pushed the dirt aside and saw it, his hands started shaking and the tears started flowing. At that point in time, we were hooked!

When time allows, we still get together and enjoy the ‘history’ that is just below the ground. Since then, we’ve upgraded to the EQUINOX 600 and continue to feed our addiction to metal detecting.

I was recently asked to join in on a permission to do some detecting. My last target ended up being a nice part of a necklace/bracelet that had a ‘925’ marking on it.
