Small coil, large cent

18 Aug 2020

My name is Ken Brands. Back in the late 1970’s I first got into metal detecting. In 2017 I got back into it and in the summer of 2019 I purchased my Equinox 800. I have permission to detect on 13 acres just down the street from my home. I try to get an hour or two in every chance I get. The relics are a lot of fun, many of which people on Facebook told me what I had found, a “rein guide” and a “sash buckle” are two good examples. All of my coins from the 1800’s were found with my Equinox 800. I had worked in one area with my old detector a lot. This February I found an 1896 Indian Head Penny in that area. On the other side of the property I was finding lots of square nails, along with a sash buckle, bits of chain, broken dishes, pieces of harmonica reeds and other items that had me thinking there was a cabin in the past. The square nails are problem. I heard folks on Facebook talk about the 6 inch coil and how they could hear the beep between the trash. On the 7th of August 2020 I was talking to Keith at Dixie Metal Detectors and I ordered the small coil. On the 8th of August, I received the coil and on August the 9th I was using it in the area of the square nails. My usual swing of the coil did not work and I reduced it swinging the coil just 12 to 18 inches, side to side. I was on all metals so I could hear the junk and about 20 minutes into the hunt I heard a beep of a higher tone. I dug and pulled the plug and sitting on top of the bottom of the hole was an 1842 large cent, my oldest coin. (So far.) I have used the 11 inch coil in that area and at times I would hear a higher tone and numbers of 20 and higher, but I could not find it again. The 6 inch coil acts like a pin pointer on steroids.
