A good friend and I recently visited an old cane barracks during a cold rainy night. We had a cracking time with some first finds for both of including a 30 Dracmai for my mate and 1 franc for me! We decided to head home after an hour or so because it was too cold and wet. A few days later the rain had subsided (it rains a lot in Far North Queensland) so we decided to go back and cover the field directly behind the building. No more than 15 min in I got a solid crisp tone and a consistent 28 VDI, my first thoughts were maybe a 2c or a half penny. A quick dig down about 6inches and flipped out the plug, there was a coin sitting in the hole of to one side slightly. As I picked it up I was shaking with excitement because I thought I had found my first shilling ! How wrong I was, but in a good way. My mate yells out “what is it?” I was silent for second because I could believe and wasn’t sure if I was really seeing the words on the coin...”Florin” I said...I think... yeah ! It’s a florin !!!! I was stoked. If I didn’t find another coin all day it didn’t matter, you couldn’t wipe the smile from my face. We continued to hunt around and managed to come out with a couple more half pennies and a penny.
