Silver Locket

30 Jun 2019

On June 21st 2019 I got permission to metal detect at the Mount Notre Dame Convent in Reading Ohio. As I was swinging the coil on that hot first day of summer I came across a signal between a penny and a dime so I dug it up and turned out to be this beautiful silver locket. How nice I thought to myself when I get home I'll put it in the ultrasonic cleaner, remove all the dirt lodged in there for years and see if there's any pictures on the inside. As I open it I was hoping that the hinge didn't break or rust apart from being in the ground for many years. Very delicately I opened it and noticed two small photographs of two young ladies. I went to Facebook and posted the pictures and the silver locket on our local Reading Forum website to see if by chance somebody would know or recognize the two girls in the locker. Lady stepped up and said "Oh my God that look so much like me and my sister wonder if there's a look-alike running around town" Cindy contacted her sister Kim to show her the locket and pictures and agreed good possibility those two pictures could be them. Sunday Cindy wanted to take a closer look at the pictures in person to determine if the two girls are really in fact her and her sister. So I met Cindy in the parking lot of a local restaurants and showed her the locket. As she held in her hands and looked at the pictures tears of happiness and goosebumps on her arm indicated instantly that I found the right owner of this silver locket. Turns out that the locket belonged to her mother who wore close to her heart but lost it maybe in the early 1980s. Cindy and Kim were about 10 years old in those pictures. Cindy and Kim's mother passed away in 2011 and both very close to her, unfortunately fire destroyed many things and they don't have many items including pictures. So I gave Cindy the locket and with shops and stores closed on Sunday nobody was available to snap a picture of us holding the locket, so we walk to our local police department requested somebody to take a picture and the dispatch was more than happy to take our picture. Cindy determine that the locket has been lost for 35 to 40 years.

Since I've been metal I have returned three class rings and a wedding band but this is my favourite return of them all.
