Revolutionary War 29th Regiment of Foot Button

27 Feb 2021

Long Island, NY. After weeks of frozen and snow covered ground, I finally made it out to my favorite farm field permission. The ground was thawed and nicely saturated from the snow melt. The field I have been hunting has produced well over 100 buttons, coins, and relics from the mid 1700's and onward. On this particular hunt I managed to add to the keeper box an 1837 US Large Cent, an 1/8th cut 1830 Large Cent, a toasted early copper, and numerous buttons and cufflinks. As amazing as all the finds were, the prize of the day was fairly well preserved British pewter button from the 29th Regiment of Foot. While there was no known encampment of the 29th on Long Island, NY during the war, this regiment had involvement in the Boston Massacre and at some point after that made some movements south of Boston into New Jersey. How it made it's way to a farm field on Long Island is anyone's guess.
