Returned Lost Wedding Ring

Success Story

I took Friday off and drove four hours to the New Hampshire seacoast for a weekend of detecting at the beach. Dug up some of the usual trash, a couple dollars in change, and a small silver necklace on Friday. Tried detecting a different beach Friday night. If you've ever detected with headphones at night, you know that strange feeling you get like someone is walking up behind you. And sometimes there will be some guy that wants to ask about detecting at 1am. Add some thick fog, zero visibility, and barking harbor seals on the beach. After a few minutes, I chickened out and went back to the campground. Much nicer on Saturday morning. I was detecting the beach at low tide and got a nice solid 12-21 on my CTX 3030. Scooped out a few inches of wet sand, dumped it out and saw that beautiful round circle of gold. I picked it up and could see the ring had writing on the outside and a hallmark inside. Later on I tried to read the ring, but could only make out some of the writing as "vous et". Did some internet searching and realized it was "vous et nul autre", French for "you and no other". On Sunday I started the search for the owner. The ring looked worn, I thought it was probably lost many years ago, but I was wrong. The owner's wife had posted on Facebook that her husband had lost a ring just like it a few weeks earlier. We exchanged a few messages, and I mailed them the ring. I hope I can meet them some day. They were very happy and wrote a wonderful post online. This is one of my favourite parts of the hobby. The story even made the local online news.
