Rare Queen Mary 1553-4

27 Nov 2020

Whilst out with a detecting friend on a good permission. We were searching a recently sown rapeseed field that we have been on a few times. I got this cracking signal on the display box. Using the 'duck-waddle' method (quickly oscillating) the coil head, I pin pointed the target. Using my big-foot spade I flicked out a plug of soft sandy soil and this beautiful large hammered coin fell from the crumbly soil plug. At first I had no idea who the monach was, but whoever it was they were wearing a very large crown on their head. I called my friend over and he knew straight away who the monach was. He said "you jammy so and so. This is a Mary silver groat. 1553-4 before she married Philip in 1554. Quite rare". I just love this coin. It's a beauty!!
