Coenwulf silver

27 Nov 2020

My son who is 4 years old and I were in what I had named the baron field as I had never found anything with my old 400i detector before, were hunting around as I knew there was a Roman camp not far away. The first signal I got was a dogs lead, so put that in my bag and carried on hunting and after a few minutes I hit another 2 good signals that ended up being 2 Roman coins. This made me very happy as now I had conformation that there is treasure here. I recorded them on my app and continued hunting, after about 45 minutes I had the next good signal and began to dig it out. I wasn’t sure of what I had found but knew it was old and not the regular coins I see on posted online. After getting an ID from more knowledgable people is turned out to be a Coenwulf silver coin dating back to 796-821AD. I had never in my wildest dreams thought I’d ever find something like this. Needless to say I went home a very happy guy that day.
