Mystery Silver Dollar

08 Sep 2019

Well I’ve had this worn out silver dollar for about 16 years and always wondered what year it was. Finally was able to date the coin but here is the story that found it. Well I decided to go out for a couple of hours to hit some more of them spots I have loaded in the GPS. It was kind of hit and miss for the first hour and then I stopped in at this old home site to ask permission. So me and the home owner sat around talking about history those 90 year olds just like talking about the old times J and He had told me he was born in this house and had just turned 90 years old and sharp as a tack I might add So I asked if it would be alright to hunt around his place and he said sure and asked me If I could find something for him. Well I said sure I will give it a shot and he said that he had lost a silver dollar about 20 or so years ago that had been passed through the family for generations. He had said he bought a mail order detector and tried to find it himself with no luck and he also let one other person on the property to try also with no luck. So I told him if it was there I'm almost sure I can find it. He took me to an area about 40 feet by 40 feet and said this is the area. Well after about 30 or so minute of detecting I got that silver hit down about mid screen overlapping the right hand side and down about 7" or so it said. So I got a warm and fuzzy feeling before I dug it and once I pulled my plug out of the hole boom there was a nice silver edge So I got my camera out took a picture and then pulled it out and I about fell over!!! So I put the plug back in the hole and walked over to the house and knocked on the front door and told Glenn I think I found your silver dollar. When I opened my hand his eyes got about twice as big and a smile came across his face. He said he hadn't seen that in 20 Plus years and was nice to see it again he was flipping it between his fingers like he had never lost it. So him and his wife Nancy looked at it for about 5 mins or so and talked back and forth and then he said well I have decided that I want you to have it!! I told him no I couldn't take that it was passed down through the family and he should just give it to his kids. But he and she insisted that I take it and put it in my little black coin book and said his kids would just throw it a drawer only to be lost again and I told them I was very thankful to have it and I would never sell it just like my other finds. So Needless to say I was a very happy camper. So after some more small talk I told them I have about a half hour left and headed back out into the yard. Next to this big old tree next to the side walk about 6-7" down I got a silver quarter hit and felt pretty good about it and when I pulled it out of the ground I did fall backwards My first every Barber Quarter There are no better detectors on the market in my opinion. I’ve been using Minelab since the explorer hit the market. As you can see from the pictures the silver dollar ended up being an 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar.
