I'm sure most people who share this great hobby of metal detecting have some sort of 'bucket list' that contains items we'd most like to find and for me, a silver dollar coin is in the top 5 of that list. After 10 years of looking, I've never found one. Until this past February 29, leap day. I was detecting at an older school yard about 20 miles from where I live here in New Mexico. It was on a Saturday when school was out. I was working the playground area that had recently been covered over with wood chips. Having already found a nice .925 silver ring, I was encouraged to continue my swinging even after 3 hours. On the last pass in the swing set area, I got a screaming 38 on the VDI of my Equinox 800. Figuring it was most likely a squashed can I began scraping away the chips when low and behold there was a beautiful shiny 1926 Peace Dollar staring back at me. I almost missed it, as I was just turning around to head back out of the playground when I got the signal. I think this is an example of the old adage, "luck of the step...". Some one's unfortunate loss was my lucky find. After all these years and countless ghost towns and abandoned homesteads, I find my silver dollar in a school yard playground!
