Great day out in the UK!

22 May 2019

Hi, I'm Leif and I'm 14, 2 years into detecting. I was on my second ever hunt a couple of weeks ago with my new Equinox 800 in the Midlands area of England, I arrived not expecting a whole lot, a new club I was digging with, not much history to the land. When I got there I was about 30 mins late, but no one had found anything yet, I was now used to the machine, so I was hoping for my first coin which had eluded me for 2 years; and boy would it arrive that day. I started out immediately on a signal, nothing good. It took a while to locate another decent signal, and when I did, I couldn't believe my eyes when I popped up the clod and there stood a magnificent, patterned Roman dolphin fibula brooch, very much my first ever, and a bucket lister for all here in the UK (although few actually find them). I was overjoyed, and keen to get going again. It didn't take long before my detector picked up another signal, a foily signal but definitely worth a dig. I dug. Nothing. I dug again, it was in the spoils, I searched with my Pro-Find 35 pinpointed, and suddenly, lying on the ground, my first coin. My first coin which was almost 800 years old. It was a Henry III type 5b long cross silver penny from 1248-1250, in perfect condition. A hammered was my first ever coin. I went to show my brother, who was swinging a Minelab Go-Find 44, he, obviously, was not entirely keen to be beaten, so we continued on together. Where he had been detecting was a hill, so I figured I would search the very bottom of the slope, because that is where rainwater would eventually wash heavier items down to. 15 or so minutes later, I had a target: an 8-10 solid signal. My brother was on the phone to my mum at the time, so decided he would commentate on my latest signal, this is what was said: "he's dug the hole, its out! Not sure where it is, though. He's got it with his pin pointer, I see it! Its round! Hammered! He's found another one!". I was overjoyed. A rare Richard I silver hammered penny from 1189-1199. 2 hammereds and a fibula in one day. I let my brother use my EQUINOX for the rest of the day, with which he found a George III penny. What a great day.
