Turn of the Century German Immigrant Keepsake

22 May 2019

On May 5th I did a quick evening hunt on the grounds of a church that was started in the late 1860's. This is a significant permission for me since my area of Minnesota was first settled after the civil war. I had found 2 silver and a lot of trash when I got a powerful 30-31 signal on my Safari. I thought it was another large piece of trash. I dug (probably the 50th hole in a little over an hour!) to reveal a large, highly decorated ring. After cleaning the piece and researching it, I found it was a napkin ring from the SS Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse. It was an ocean liner that carried immigrants from the German Port of Bremen from 1897 until about 1910. It was converted into a war ship and sunk in 1914. The ring has pictures and names of the ship, and two light houses from the port. It also has engraved initials that I can't quite decipher yet. Between historic maps, and the ships passenger lists, I'm hoping to find out who may have belonged to.
