Digging for the first time with my son Sam.

One recent Sunday morning right before dawn I was gearing up to do some early morning detecting. The house was still but then my middle son Sam walks past me. We exchanged quiet good mornings and I was all set to leave. After years of receiving feeble excuses and rejected offers from my three boys I half-heartedly asked Sam if he wanted to go with me to a local park. "Just one hour", I said. He paused for a second, and then said, "Sure". It took me about a minute to pick my jaw up from off the floor but then I quickly got him out the door and we headed to one of our local parks. I teach Sam the basics and using the Equinox 800 we detect for about 50 minutes of the agreed upon one hour digging up clad and a few other keepers. We head back to parking lot when we receive a sharp and shallow 24 on the VDI. We kneel down to cut the small plug and then flip it over. At the exact same moment we both catch sight of something ornate and shiny entangled in the roots just below the surface. I quickly cover it back up and decide to take our first significant find together LIVE on Facebook. It is one of those 'clutch' moments that really saves the day. After pulling out the beautiful silver ring we leave the park exactly one hour after we'd arrived. On the ride home he looks at me and asks, "Can I keep it?". Now I'm not sure if he's hooked or not, or that he'll ever agree to go digging again. But what I do know is that our time shared together was special and one that we'll both always remember.
