On Friday 4th October whilst searching a new field behind my local church which dates back to the 13th century, I came across a signal which registered about 15 on the VDi, after digging down only about 6 to 8 inches I came across a small silver item I had a quick look and put it in my finds coin pod not really paying much attention to it, I continued to search for the rest of the day only finding modern and Georgian coinage, the following day after cleaning up the silver item it became apparent that this wasn't just a bit of s rap silver but something a little more important, after cleaning and taking magnified impinges and sharing them on my metal detecting Facebook groups the consensus was that this was a Norman ring set with what is probably a rare King Stephen penny, the find has now been reported to the Somerset FLO, who has stated that there is the possibility that it could be associated with being part of a hoard, well exciting times ahead, but even if it’s not I believe its possibly an historically important find, and has been declared officially as Treasure under our current laws
