An 1849 young Victoria gold half sovereign was starring back at me!

01 Sep 2020

I love searching rocky beaches. My Equinox 800 has served me well during my hunts for sinkers, coins and the occasional ring. Including those pesky pull tabs and bottle tops off course. On a recent adventure I had had enough and decided to dig my final hole. The target was most likely a pull tab but I dig everything so I started. It was beginning to rain and I was starving. The hole was filled with mud, rock and sand which filled quickly with murky water. My pointer found the target quickly which was almost on bed rock. I scooped in underneath the item which was embedded in thick clay and scooped it up and out of the water. The glint of gold was instant but in my mind I thought I'd just dug a golden folied chocolate coin! I picked it out of the mud and realized with disbelief that I was holding an item I'd only read about. Quickly washing off the mud my suspicions were satisfied. An 1849 young Victoria gold half sovereign was starring back at me!
