Metal detecting with the Sovereign GT using manual sensitivity settings in the discrimination mode.
Manual sensitivity
Most people metal detect at the same sites on a regular basis, for a beach hunter that means discovering which level of manual sensitivity suits certain sites and adjusting the sensitivity control accordingly. Do not worry about setting the sensitivity too high, I assure you that your Sovereign GT will tell you if you have the sensitivity set too high. When making the transition from the beginner Sovereign user phase to the advanced Sovereign user the best manual sensitivity level is the one that produces the least amount of false signals.
Discrimination control
Once you advance past the initial learning period with the Sovereign GT, I recommend that you turn the discrimination control all the way down to the most anti clockwise position.
Learn to recognize the sounds of bottle caps and partially corroded conductive targets.
You probably will not stop to dig them but the zero discrimination will ensure that you now hear all conductive targets. Signal tones from two different conductive targets will now become more discernible.
Using any amount of discrimination you can miss valuable targets that have come to rest next to bottle caps or corroding pennies. If you think you hear more than one signal tone from a target, try sweeping your search coil over the target from a different direction.
Using zero discrimination on the Sovereign GT you do not just hear the stronger of the two targets when two metal objects are resting together.
The gold tone
Without doubt the number one target on any beach hunters “to find” list is gold.
The Sovereign GT has an unforgettable signal response to gold targets, a low tone that is sweet music to every beach hunters ears.
Not every low tone is gold, fools gold can be found disguised as nickels, pull tabs and aluminum foil. After many hours of Sovereign hunting even these low tones can be recognized when compared to the mellow low tone produced by gold. Use the discrimination abilities of the Sovereign GT to pick out the low gold tones in heavy trash areas.
Advanced settings used on the GT provide the increased depth and sensitivity needed to find gold, the slower you sweep your search coil the more low tone signals your ears will pick out.
