Old Ground Becomes New

08 Jun 2012

What a package
It is exciting when you find a place that is so good that you just can’t wait to go back there, but it is equally as sad when that place starts to run out of targets. This was the case with a place I have named “The Bottomless Pit” for just that reason, the area is not much bigger than a soccer pitch and yet it has remarkably produced over 2,700 coins, follow the story at http://coinrelicdownunder.wordpress.com. I was starting to think that it had not much left to offer until I teamed up the CTX 3030 from Minelab with the 17-inch CTX 17 coil, I also used the WM 10 wireless module and all I can say is Shaz-zam! In over 20 years of detecting I must say that I was absolutely gob smacked, time and time again as I went over ground that I have gridded to find target after target that made it feel like I had just started at a new spot.

Metal detector finds - coins

Given that I have been over this spot thoroughly, I was somewhat confused after going over it with the CTX 3030 and the 11-inch stock coil, finding 38 coins and two small silver rings in an area that I have done. That made me actually start doubting myself and I thought, maybe I had just missed them or it was the soil conditions etc, but after my effort with the large coil I have no doubt that the CTX 3030 is an exceptional metal detector and completely in a league of its own.

The CTX 3030 is about to open up places that are thought to have been hunted out as if they haven’t had a metal detector swung over them. I was finding coins at between 6 and 10 inches while running the stock coin pattern and only changing the discrimination in the top right hand corner with only 1:49 to 1:50 taken out (reducing the ground noise). Be careful though because some big silvers come in up there.

I Have Been Wondering
I am sure that like a lot of other people using the E-TRAC, I have been wondering how Minelab could possibly improve on such a remarkable metal detector. Myself being a staunch believer in the E-TRAC thought that the day would never come where I found myself reaching with confidence for another detector and I will say it seems very alien. The CTX 3030 has really proven itself to me over the last half a dozen outings and I am actually starting to have much more faith in its ability to outgun the E-TRAC. As much as it feels like I am betraying an old friend, I by no means am saying the E-TRAC is not a good machine as it is so much better than its rivals, I feel that it has met its match in the CTX 3030.
