On a hot warm afternoon in sunny field in the Gloucestershire country side, on a large field I managed to get permission on the night before talking to the farmer over an ice cold pint of cider, I left my coat on fence post as the sun was shining so hot.
As I walked around the field picking the ode Georgian penny up, a shocking thought shot thought my head... my wallets in there!!! (100£ inside) and on a public footpath... in full panic I rushed over to get my coat... thank God it's was still there.
Panic over, as I look over the field I see an old 1800 farm house. Come on Georgian lets be have you, half way across the field my trusty Minelab Explorer II went crazy and stood next to a lamppost, I thought it was a bit of waste that had feel a long pipe etc.
As I looked down to see a Roman coin looking me in the eye, as I pushed my spade in to the soft ploughed dirt and lifted up, there were roman coins falling left, right and centre.
As I sat over my hole to think about the plan of action and puffing my cigarette on the phone to the finds liaison officer, who was now on his way after his wife was not best pleased for the call on a Sunday well he was doing the paint, thoughts started running again how many are they all in same fabulous condition.
It was the longest hour of my life until the finds liaison officer turned up with a spade and a pick. We dug away and talked about what colour he was painting his house while putting handful of Roman coins in bag... at final count 764 bronze and silver Roman coins are now in the British museum to be cleaned.
