Three of us decided to do a Hunt last Saturday - Hell and High water! And high water it was as the rain continued as they have done for almost a month now. We agreed to work a WWII site I had researched and headed out. It was very slow start with limited finds: an Axe head and a vintage ladies belt. Then an Australian Military forces brass tunic button and a 1910 KG V shilling followed by a nice intact ceramic Ink well (Circa WWI standard issue).
After an hour, 'Sue' dug what was an 1884 penny and an 1877 3 pence. I dug what I realised was a large brass Rifle shooter plate! This was to be the curiosity of the day as I also dug a number of unusual size cartridge case remanets! (These proved to be 17.8 base dia.) We soon established the stock plate came from a P-1853 Lee Enfield / P-1854 Snider! (I have the piece in my electrolysis vat at the moment and have not raised the ID number I believe is engraved on the plate.) This has been verified by the presence of the cartridge cases. In brief, a great day with more WWII pieces and colonial relics, even silver coins. We were soaked to the skin from top to bottom but all worthwhile and a promise to return to the site. The CTX 3030 delivers once again!
