Two days ago, on July 19, 2016, I received a text message from a friend. He was inviting me to a permission site that had already yielded him over 20 silver coins. I simply could not say no! After a couple hours of hunting, we both quickly realized that the ground we were on wasn't going to produce the coins that he'd found just a block over. Occasionally an old wheat penny would maintain our interests of remaining on the site. I was the first one to net a silver coin, a 1956D Roosevelt dime.
There were signs of a lot of people in the area over the years, but not the payload of coins that we'd expected. The real surprise happened for me a day later. After working a full 12 hour day, I'd decided to clean up some of the odds and ends that weren't complete junk. I was fixated on an aluminium disc with a hole in it. As I removed the dirt, I was soon able to read a name punched into it! A little research led me to believe that this might be an early military ‘dog tag' dating from WWI. As it turns out, it is exactly what I suspected! I have made contact with family (who still live in Iowa) and it is now in the works to make it back into their lives. I am absolutely convinced that this is the BEST machine that I've ever owned!!
Update to this story (4 August 2016) Last Saturday I met with Linda Burnett and returned the lost tag to the family that it belongs with. There were a couple generations of family there and it got passed around while Kenneth's daughter in law related the stories that she remembered. I always get a little choked up when I see the flood of emotions
