I was invited back to a friend’s permission we had previously found hammered coins on. The day started slow with only 2 signals, both being small pieces of scrap lead, so I decided to go to the adjacent field. I started gridding a small area next to the field entrance and within 3 lines and ten minutes my Explorer XS gave a banging high tone. I dug about 2 inches of the ploughed earth and seen a glimmer of silver. Straight away I knew it would be a hammered but I thought it would be another eddy penny, I picked it up and cleared the mud with my finger to reveal a cracking portrait of King Henry VI. My excitement overcome me and I jigged to the previous field to show my buddy. After showing him we revealed it was a half groat of Henry VI minted in Calais between 1422-1461. This was the best condition hammered coin I have found and I'm still surprised that it managed to dodge the Plough all these years. What a fantastic day!!!
