A short afternoon search on my favourite field was coming to an end since the sun was setting, early as always in Denmark in the autumn. Sadly, without any good finds, just a few cartridges of the rimfire type.
I headed towards the old church where my car was parked, swinging the old faithful X-TERRA 70 without much hope of finding anything on the last few meters. When I actually got a good signal. I figured it would just be another cartridge.
No, that wasn't it. But was what that? As it emerged from the lump of soil I had dug up I couldn't tell. Looked like a folded strip of bronze with quite a bit of soil sticking to it. A closer look showed a bit of ornament in the form of an X so I figured it had to be something a bit more significant than scrap metal. I put it in a ziploc bag, noted the findspot and headed to the car while I still had a bit of daylight.
Back home after a bit of dinner it was time to have a closer look. First I let it soak a bit in a small plastic bowl with some demineralised water. Had to be careful since I had no clue what it was. As the soil came off I could see some more ornaments and finally it dawned on me what I had found: Tweezers!
By the shape and ornaments it's likely Viking tweezers. That also seems plausible with the other finds from the field.
So yet again the good old X-TERRA 70 was able to bring something to the light of day after a thousand years in the soil. That never fails to humble me.
