vampire burial

26 Sep 2022

Hi, I am MikoĊ‚aj and I am passionate about history. A few weeks ago, the news about the upcoming archaeological research near my place of residence appeared on the archaeological group. So I offered my help with the research. The research was aimed at examining the early medieval cemetery. While taking a break from typical archaeological tasks, such as removing earth layers, documentation or photos, I was able to search the area with a metal detector. There was also a 17th century cemetery near the previously explored medieval cemetery. While exploring the area, in the hawk of the ground, I came across a brace that most likely came from that century. It was a movable object with no historical context, so it wasn't that interesting. During the following days of work, burials appeared at the place where the clamp was found, including one of a woman's burial. It was an incredibly shocking discovery. Most probably a 17-year-old woman had a sickle around her neck, a head wrapped in a cloth with silver thread and a padlock on her toe. Most likely, it was feared that the woman might haunt the villagers after her death. It was not a typical anti-vampire burial, as the woman was buried respectfully. It was a really great adventure. As a rule, I am looking for movable monuments without context, this time I participated in archaeological research. I have gained a lot of experience and I am extremely proud that I could be a part of this project at least to a small extent!
