Upper Michigan Half Cent

28 Oct 2022

My name is Larry . I am 21 and from Escanaba, Michigan. I have been metal detecting for 5 years now. I just bought the equinox 600 and have had excellent success with it. This year I have found 7 silver coins with it and some float copper. On the 26th I decided to do some hunting and was having a slow day. A few wheat cents and a lot of clad coins. I was getting ready to give up a then I got a 19-20 on the nox at 3 to 4 bars on the depth indicator. I dug down to about 7 inches and then I popped a coin out. At first I thought I dug a clad quarter on edge but then looking at it I thought;” George Washington doesn’t look like that “. I then thought token but when I saw “Liberty” at the top of the coin I new I found something amazing. I first thought I found a large cent. I got very excited when I saw the date 1804 on it. I realized it was too small to be a large cent. And showed it to my friend who is a hardcore coin collector. Right away he knew it was a Draped Bust half cent!!! What is crazier about my find is according to the former president of the Yooper Coinshooters Metal Detecting Club. I may have found the oldest American coin in Delta County,Mi with a metal detector! Seeing how Escanaba became a town in 1863, it’s older than the state! Definitely a find I will remember for the rest of my life. My Minelab Equinox 600 rocks!!!
