Unexpected Treasure on an Empty Lot

15 Nov 2020
Find of
the Month

After a snowy October in Northern Wisconsin, the weather turned around allowing for one last window of detecting weather. I got a new permission and was on my third day at the site, hoping to complete the site before the snow and cold returned. I was running my CTX with a discrimination pattern that allowed for mostly good targets. Enjoying the warm weather and just being outside was equally important to collecting finds. I really didn’t think I’d find much on the large empty lot and wasn’t even mindful of the readings on my screen or the sounds in my headphones. I was just digging repeatable signals. What happened next was mostly a blur. I dug a six-inch plug and uncovered a little leather coin purse covered in dirt and plant roots. It was full of something. I unzipped the side compartment and found nothing. Since I knew there was something in it, I searched until I was able to locate another zipper. I was able to open it and was surprised to see rings, lots of rings, in fact, a total of twenty-three rings! When I got home, I posted the find on my detecting club, The Northwoods Diggers and Divers, site. They responded immediately and I could feel them celebrating with me. I carefully cleaned the rings and took them to a jeweler to see how many were real. Final Tally: Twelve gold/diamond rings; one gold/opal ring; one sterling silver ring; and nine rings that are costume jewelry. Truly the find of a lifetime and still hard for me to comprehend. Thank you for the opportunity to share my find and for making such a great detector. I’ll be submitting an expanded story about the rings and other finds in the Western and Eastern Treasures magazine as well.
