Triple Bucket Lister in a Single Dig

02 May 2021

It had been at least a couple years since my wife tagged along to a hunt but since my buddy was bringing along his spouse, she decided to come too. What she witnessed me dig will never be forgotten: a triple bucket lister. It all started the day before where when we decided we were all going to go on a dig together so that evening I scrambled to find us a new site and by chance I came across a farmer who gave me permission for some fields. I let my buddy know I had secured a new site, however that it was "Only a Victorian site" We normally dig older sites. Turned out to be the best Victorian site ever. After a few hours of digging it was apparent the house had burned down. While there were all the normal targets, there were also many beer cans. After digging my third can in a row, I got another screamer. I joked with my wife wondering out loud what brand this one would be. You can imagine to my surprise when I dug a melted clump of coins. My triple bucket lister. My first cashe, gold coin and Victorian quarters in a single dig. At first, while it was apparent I had some gold color, I wasn't quite sure what I had. I gave it a simple wash in a mud puddle and it became more obvious. An 1861 half gold sovereign in perfect condition but clumped together with a pair of melted Victorian quarters and melted Victorian dime. Hard to believe the fire had been just hot enough to melt the silver but yet leave the gold in perfect condition. Regardless this clump now proudly sits as centerpiece of my best finds collection. I think I need to bring my wife along more often!
