On the 5th August 2009 a badly wounded female leopard seal stranded on Horseshoe Beach, Newcastle (near Nobbys Lighthouse) and by late afternoon a crowd was gathering behind the National Parks & Wildlife barrier when Scully, 1233 ABC local radio reporter arrived. It was not until later when Scully arrived home that he realized his Wedding Ring was missing. Next morning by 6 am Scully was back at Horseshoe Beach scraping around trying to find his wedding ring. During a live cross to the 1233ABC Breakfast program about the leopard seal saga – Scully put out call for assistance from someone with a metal detector. Not hearing a response I contacted 1233ABC Breakfast program and offered my services, having the necessary equipment and approximately 30 minutes later was down at Horseshoe Beach – a very cold westerly winter morning. Scully showed me the suspect area, so started ‘sweeping’ hopefully to find his wedding ring. Fish hooks, sinkers, plastics, bottle tops but alas no wedding ring. An hour later when Scully returned from a call we concentrated on an area that had been covered by floating trash at the high tide mark and after about 12 minutes my detector gave a rather loud “signal”. Scooping off the top layer of sand, checked scoop, no object, so back over same spot a much clearer signal this time and scoop revealed SUCCESS the Wedding Ring -----Scully exclaimed loudly “ THE SWEETEST SOUND I HAVE EVER HEARD “ As he retrieved his Wedding Ring, gave me a massive bear hug, took photos of myself with the detector – Sovereign XS - and home made scoop and a full interview to complete the venture.
