The elephant in the ground

31 May 2020

Just thought you'd like to hear about a little find that turned up the other day when I was out metal detecting...

It was a little elephant with clips on the back.. I had no idea what it was but my detecting buddy suggested I look up military cap badges. It turns out it's a lapel badge and not only any lapel badge, but that of the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment.

I went to look up a photograph of my grandfather's brother, Hamilton Moss who was killed in the First World War and gained the Military Cross for his bravery as I thought he was in that Regiment. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the picture I have of him ...look what is wearing!

Obviously this won't be his but what a spooky coincidence to find it in the field opposite me when I live in North Yorkshire and he lived in Sunderland so I'm not sure why he was in The West Riding of Yorkshire Regiment in the first place!
