Swing low n swing it slow

22 Nov 2020

With the colder months gone and it warming up, the time to get out for a detect is in challenge with getting the garden up to scratch and all the chores done around the house. So with the lawns mowed and few things done during the week after work, some time for me and my son to get up to the Forrest was looking good. Come early Saturday morning we headed up to an area we have done a dozen times to check it out and see what we could find. Its a pine forest one side of the road and native bush the other and further up the road is the old mine shafts and diggings of the 1800s. I said to my son ( he’s 11 ) what do you reckon we’ll find today? He said “probably more bullets dad, it seems to find them pretty easy(the gpx). Is there even gold here dad we’ve been here like a 100 times! We’ve only been to the spot several times together but I’ve been with my brother a couple times, so to him being young it’s probably a little boring.

Anyway with a couple of other cars parking up and I think fellow detectors, we had a quick drink and muesli bar then I tuned in the Gpx5000 ready for our hunt. We slowly worked along the what you could call a creek line ( more man made than natural) finding old foil/old cigarette lining, couple 22 bullets when my son said try here dad someone’s dug it out already. Well as you do, you check the dig outs (those not filling there holes) and when I got a high low sticking the coil in under the edge of the tree I thought probably another 22 slug. Like a good father a got the young fella digging. He picked it out a bit and scrapped it. I poked the coil back in and got the higher response this time. Keep digging I said! He dug abit further and said your turn. About 30cm down was a fair size root so I picked around it and just below it. When I scrapped out the loose stuff I put the coil in and no signal so it was now out the hole. I spread out the small pile and pin pointed with the coil edge. I didn’t even need to use the scoop, it was looking directly at me saying hello. I picked it up and said to my son bingo buddy we’ve actually found a little nugget. Pretended it was a bullet lol quietly put it my container and we kept searching with more enthusiasm to find the next bit. After another hour or so and still no more gold, so with it warming up and getting hungry we called it a day and headed home for lunch. Put an old tooth brush over it and it came up shiny as once all the dirt was off. Put it on kitchen scales as I don’t have gold scales and it weighed in at 6g.

The GPX5000 is an amazing machine and I hope to find much more during our hunts. Perseverance and Patience pays off.
