Stunning Merovingian brooch

23 Jul 2018

In my 36 years searching I have ups and downs, I love going out in the early morning and try to find Roman coins or artefacts...and every now and then you have that moment when there come something above the ground what gives you the high heartbeat and big boost off adrenaline. 5 o'clock in the morning and the cornfields excavated and the gravel in the soil sucked out. Hectare's field becomes deep gravel holes filled with water for recreation. For me it feels like the last chance to rescue what is in the soil. The top layer was already been removed on the fields and nobody was busy yet. 5 o clock in the morning and beautiful sunrise but almost no signals ... and then a short hard tone and 21 on display ... and then a stunning Merovingian fibula comes up, in mint condition like is was buried yesterday.

It is not gold and not a super nice coin. But I will not find something this beautiful anymore! Reaction and determination from Futch PAN. (Archaeological reporting point): Hello Jack, Beautiful find with beautiful patina. The fibula is, in my opinion, of the type Heeren & Van der Feijst 81a (clamp fibula with semi-round head plate). They date from 430 to 470/500 AD.

Cheers Jack Gielen - Netherlands
