I am still in shock after what I found today. My friend Jordan Harboldt took me to a cellar hole that he and another friend had been to before and we spent a few hours there trying to coax some goodies out of old mother earth. My first good find was an 1849 LC in amazingly great condition and probably the best LC I've ever found. Then a short time later I was searching in the road about 40-50 ft from the cellar hole when I got multiple tones and VDI #s I slowed my swing down and thought there must be 2 targets and so I locked on to the best one first and the Nox was steady on 19 and 20 so I dug down about 6-7 inches and it was pretty hard packed dirt in the old road and up comes this bright green disc and I barely brushed enough dirt off so I could just ID it. Yes it was an Indian Head Penny ok no biggie but a nice find anyway and at the time I didn't bother to look for the date so I showed Jordan who had just came to where I was. He said yes it's an IHP and he then showed me a Civil War token he had found. Then I dug the other target which was about 6 inches from where the IHP was (my coil is 11 inches) so I dig up an OX shoe and that was the junky tone. Not long after that we were about done for the day so we headed back to where I had left my vehicle in another town and just before we parted company he said can I look at your coins again and so I handed them to him. He said hey the LC will clean up nicely and then he started to scrape some of the heavy crud off the IHP with his thumbnail. All of a sudden he was freaking out and said I can't believe it (about 3 times) and I looked at him his eyes were big as coffee cups and I said WHAT? I jokingly said hah 1877 and he said yeah and I can't believe it again. I have had a very blessed year before this day and I am still in shock. Now I must get this coin professionally graded. I have a before and after pics of both coins but only the obverse sides. I did lightly clean the dirt with Andre's Pencils and I did use just a little of the Steel wool on the LC but not the IHP. I'm sure someone will give me flac for even cleaning the IHP. But oh well.
