Well we need to step back in time, twice as it happens .I was on a Gwent Detecting Club weekend rally in August 2015. Quite a few nice objects had surfaced and I was beaming ear to ear as I had found a silver annular brooch, with a spring in my step I carried on swinging into the next field which was huge, news through the grapevine was there was a few Roman items surfacing so I made my way to what looked like a small bank overlooking a dip in the field. Swinging away on lovely summers day and get a diggable signal, out with the trowel and about 6 inches down I unearthed a figure, who or what I didn't know could it be Roman I thought to myself.I quickly griddled the area and bang another diggable signal smaller than the last but none the less a diggy ,out with the trowel once more scooping away the rich soil I spied a small piece of metal ,on closer observation it looked like a hand …..Yes!!! I had found another part of the figure .I griddled that area for another hour nothing! Handed my find to the local FLO ,came back and was unsure of a date …...fast forward in time 2019 I had moved areas and once again I put it under the nose of my local FLO. She said I know just the person who should see this a Professor Martin Henig (university of oxford) has examined the figure and comments that the object appears to be a heavily leaded bronze depicting Neptune/Poseidon. The god stands holding a dolphin with a crest and possibly holding a trident in the other hand. The figure with its wind or wave swept beard is unusual for Neptune; the expressive face and livelier swing of the body is far superior to other examples. Henig mentions the head of Neptune in stone from Cirencester, the Bodiccan tombstone depicting the head of Oceanus, and a Neptune with mask conflated with a Medusa from Bath and stated This is a find of note and has been designated: Regional importance....id on PAS site OXON-C146AD.....so you can see it’s taken 5 years but I got there in the end and so did Neptune Paul Reed - United Kingdom
