Stage Coach Route

30 Aug 2022

After much research I found an old stage coach route amazing close to where I live in Georgetown, Kentucky. The stage coach route had a toll booth where they collected money for stage coach passage. I went to the horse farm that was close to the area I wanted to search. At first the farm owner was skeptical until I showed the old map that I had found of the site. The area I wanted to search had cattle grazing. He agreed I could search the property as long as I did not disturb his cattle. I agreed and off I went, CTX 3030 in hand. I was finding small things that told me there had been someone there, silver forks, spoons, etc. I got a hit and started digging, this looked like a lock box, and it was at least 2 feet deep. I was amazed at the depth the CTX was finding items. It was part of a metal box that was turned upside down with nothing in it. I was continuing my search when the I saw the home owner coming toward me. I thought one of two things, he is curious, or he has had a change of mind. I was wrong about both. He asked me if I knew the history of the house that was up on the hill, he pointed to the house. I told him that I was not familiar with the house. He stated that the road that was near where I was searching was named after him in the 1800’s. Much to my amazement he said after you are done here you can go to the house and search the property. I could not wait to get in my truck and drive up there, eager as to what I might find. I packed up my tools and drove up an adjacent driveway to the old home. I saw an old hitching post where travelers would tie up their horses. Excited to get started I again I broke out the CTX and started hunting. I was finding a lot of kids toys when I decided to move closer to the front porch. I got a strong signal right next to the porch. I started digging, then I saw it, it was pointing out of the dirt. I thought, is this what I think it is? It looks like the edge of a badge! I was so excited I could not wait to get it out. Sure enough, I had found a Marshalls badge! I did not want to damage the badge by rubbing it too hard, so I decide to pack up and take it home and clean it carefully. I packed up my CTX and all my tools and left not believing what I had found. On the way home I was thinking about what had caused it to be there, was the Marshall looking for someone, was there a struggle on the front porch that caused the Marshall to lose the badge? My mind went crazy. When I got it home, I started running in under hot water to get the dirt off. There it was, the lettering said, “Deputy Marshall” with the number 3 on it. Much to my disappointment it was a toy badge (circa 1950’s). I started thinking, I was rehearsing what had happened on the front porch just like the kid that lost the badge. I am sure there was some pretend struggle with the bad guy with the gun, both the bad guy and the Deputy Marshall fell off the porch and so it goes. Is that not what spurs us to go out for the hunt? Thinking about how it got into the ground to begin with, is that not what curses through our veins on the hunt, finding what someone else has lost. I am sure you are a lot like me, manned with the best detector in the world, my CTX delivers stories for me to share for years to come.
