Silver Success

08 Mar 2022

After getting home from work early I decided to get out detecting for an hour before dark on a local field that has been heavily detected in the past. The farmer has cultivated it but said I had a couple of weeks to get on it before he sows it with maize. Taking my Vanquish 540 I selected relic mode and started scanning the sandy soil, my first two targets were junk but I soon picked up a solid 14 at about 7 inches depth. I thought at first I’d found a thick button but I was amazed when I cleared off the dirt to reveal a stunning Roman silver denarius of emperor Hadrian. I find a lot of Roman artefacts in this area with my Vanquish but this is my first complete Roman silver and the sandy soil has left it in stunning condition after nearly 2000 years in the ground. I can’t wait for the weekend to get back out on that field!
