Scottish William 1 (The Lion) cut half penny 1165-1214

28 Nov 2020

Detecting on a good permission using my E-Trac with Z-link head phones and pointer. I decided to work on a sloping area of the field which had recently been sown and rolled. The signal was a bit scratchy but I decided to dig it anyway. I passed the coil of the plug of soil, but no signal. Moving the coil back across the hole the signal came in loud and clear so I used my pointer and located the target to the side, but at the bottom of the hole. I carefully used my digging knife and there in the palm of my hand was what I thought was just another piece of tin foil. I rubbed the item carefully and there it was, my fourth hammered cut half ever! Looking at it I realised it wasn't a type I'd seen before. It was a short cross and had a star above and below the short cross. I later discovered the cut half to be a rare Scottish William 1 (The Lion) who reigned between 1165-1214. He was also known by the nickname Garbh, "the Rough". I just love this hobby when you unearth history like this going back so far in time.
