Saved a Marriage

13 Dec 2020

Okay, so maybe the title is a big corny but it get's attention. Anyway, I'm in Aruba and its the 2nd of December 2020 and knee deep in the ocean water when I get a hit. I look at my display and it's right at the (I found a nickel) VDI 13. Only its a strong and not bouncing signal which also makes me think it's a nickel. The pull tabs primary get 12-13 but bounce. Nickels usually get a steady 13. In any event, I scoop down about 8-10 inches in the water, sift the sand and there it is, a ring. As silver as can be but hey, a ring is a ring. I go back to my room after another hour, I look up the stamp on the inside of the ring as I think it must be sterling and low and behold, its white gold. Happy days for me!

5 days later and one day before I leave to go home, I'm at the beach and a young couple approach and ask what type of metal I find and have I found and gold wedding bands. I always say no as to if I found something as so many people jokingly and a very few seriously tell me they lost something. They tell me its a white gold wedding band and they just got married a week ago and the husband lost it the second day they were there. So I take their information down, tell them that if I find the ring I will call them but they need to show me a picture of the ring to verify. Well I go back to my room and tell my wife that I think found their ring and I have to return it. We go to their hotel at 5 pm, I ask the front desk to get them on the phone and I proceed to tell them that I think I have their lost ring. Within in two minutes they are down stairs with photo's on their phone. I pull out the ring from my pocket and hand it over. The husband takes, puts it on his finger and begins with, "Oh my god, you found my ring. It fits, its my ring. I can't believe this. Your a saint. I have to hug you, can I hug you?". Then we hug and now the funniest comment, "My mother is going to be so happy as she was so upset I lost it". Yes, he was worried more about his mother's upset more than his new wife. My wife and I chuckle. He then reaches into his pocket, gets his wallet out and says I have to pay you and grabs hundred dollar bills (plural). I say to him, "I don't want to get paid, I'm just glad I could get this back to you". He says, "I have to give you something". So I said, "How about a cappuccino from Starbucks and one dessert for my wife". We spoke for about 1/2 hour while I drank my cappuccino and my wife ate a slice of chocolate cake and then we went our separate ways. He was also going home the next day. Right before we parted, he said one more time, "I don't know how else to thank you". I told him, "One day your be able to pay it forward for someone else, and you will".
