The first week out with my E-TRAC, I came across a small bronze disc with glass enamelled to one side. It was so well made I thought it was off a Victorian snuff box and threw it in the garage with my other rubbish.
Three months later whilst wandering in the Roman section of the British Museum in London I nearly fell over when I saw an exact copy of the disc in a display case.
It turns out that the disc was not a piece of scrap after all but a 1st century Roman millifiori mount which had been welded to a Roman officers uniform.
The find was only 3” deep in the ground and was found next to the site of an old Roman road called “The Devils Causeway” in north Northumberland, England.
It is only the 4th such find in the UK and is the only one found North of the Roman Wall (Hadrian’s Wall).
The find was nominated for the nation’s greatest find and came in the top 6 of hundreds of entries.
It was sold at Bonham’s in London for £8,150.
So much for a piece of scrap.
