I was using a Minelab Safari which is my newest purchase, before I was using a Tesoro Deleon , I must say it took me a while to get to grips with the Minelab but I have seen my find rate go through the roof and to have found a silver roman has made me a very proud treasure hunter and something I will never forget.
I am 37 and have been metal detecting on and off since I was a teenager. The day started on a nicely ploughed and rolled field on the Northamptonshire borders, weather was good and the soil was well drained and dry, but with a clay element when in depth. I was with my club Magiovinium; a small but well established club in the Milton Keynes area, started by Michael Billingham and Melvin Bannister.
I started lined up with some words form our chairman wishing us luck and happy hunting, little did I know it was going to be the best day ever metal detecting. I had plenty of buttons as we always do on this field but I don't mind buttons as its better than nails. Anyway, I was running my machine on all metal mode and have zoned out 0-10. I had a nice roman broach, then two pieces of another broach, shortly followed by a couple of very worn roman coins, which are always still nice to find. Then the detector chirped like it has never before, a high and solid sound. I dug about a foot down, scanned the pile and then probed it before catching sight of silver, it was just sitting there.
Wow, I couldn't believe it. I looked at it and gently rubbed it, exposing the amazing detail on it. Man, I was smiling from ear to ear. Of course I kissed it and ran over to my club colleague, Lee, who was impressed to say the least. After showing everyone that I could, calling my fiancé, I got back to detecting and about three foot away I heard a similar sound, I dug and again. Could it be a second coin? It was silver, but this time it was a little silver ring. I couldn’t believe what a day I was having, in fact it has been the best day detecting I have ever had. I must say after all these years I still get excited about every dig and finding my silver roman just makes me want to dig all the time. And my fiancé wished she had not stayed in bed.
