Rare US Revolutionary War Button

30 May 2020

Went out with a friend on a spur of the moment hunt to a wooded area on Long Island, NY. This site has produced many finds for me over the last year including half Reales, King George III coins, and a 1851 US $2.50 gold coin. On recent hunts there I have not found much but decided on giving it another try in a different area of the woods that I hadn't spent much time in. The first hour did not produce much other than some nice square nails and shotgun shells. A short while later my coil swung over a nice solid 12 signal on my Equinox 800. I dug the plug and after a short search with the pinpointer, pulled out a button. I've found so many flat buttons, I sometimes just take a quick look and put them in my pouch. This particular button I could tell had some form of writing and a design on the face of it. Still didn't pay it too much attention and put it in the small pocket of my jeans for a look later when I returned home. Once I returned home, I took the button out and lightly brushed off the caked on soil with a soft bristle brush. It revealed the letters and design clear enough to read and at this time still wasn't sure what I had. I did a quick internet search of the phrase on the button which read "The Kings America Dragoons" and also had two letters in the middle which said "LD". I hit the search button and what comes up is that this particular button was worn by a small group of provincial British Loyalist militia named the Kings America Dragoons. From my research so far, these buttons are quite rare and very few are known to be in existence. They can also be quite valuable and am awaiting an appraisal on what this scare button could be worth. Very excited to own such a piece of American history.
