Old Ironsides in Texas

23 Jun 2020

The USS Constitution is the most famous ship in American Naval history. Still a commissioned ship, "Old Ironsides" remains docked in Boston to this day. Finding a piece of this famous ship in Texas was a big surprise. I was detecting a recently torn down building. There lot had been scraped several inches down leaving not a lot of good signals but soil that had been compacted into a concrete-like solid. Digging was tough so I was being selected with what I chose to dig. After about 30 yards of nothing I hit a solid 40. I mean a screaming signal that did not waver off of 40 at all. In my experience, a 40 on the Equinox is usually trash. A hubcap or doorstop, but not treasure. A quick pinpoint and the signal is small. Now I am curious. I break the ground and I see what appears to be an anchor chain link. The link is only a few inches wide and is made of solid copper. The weight in my hand is very heavy. Embossed in the metal is "Old Ironsides" and "USN." After contacting the USS Constitution museum to enquire about the find, I discover that this piece was a souvenir made from copper removed from the ship in 1927 and are quite rare. I now slow down a bit when I hit a solid 40 signal!
