It was a cold, rainy, May afternoon, It was one of my first real times out with my E-TRAC, which I had purchased near Christmas time this last year.
I was excited to finally get out and find coins after a very strangely long winter. I took that time to learn the E-TRAC in and out, and all of its numbers and sounds.
I was taking it slow through a tiny park I had hit with my beginner metal detector, which my dad was using. I was by some old trees and he was on a large patch of dead grass. We traded spots and I hit a 12-44 ranging all the way from 9-49 at around 7 inches. I dug down into the half frozen ground with my digger and pulled the plug out of the hole, turned my pinpointer on and starting scanning the hole.
I got a twitch of sound, but couldn't find it again. I finally recover the almost lost signal on the opposite side of the hole, I felt the edge, saw a silvery glimpse before some dirt fell on it; guessing on my luck, I immediately assume its aluminum, but just for giggles I call my dad over to the hole.
He sees what I see and flips it out, I immediately start shaking by what I see, A mercury dime's obverse, sitting right in the hole. I snatch it out of the hole and without thinking, rub it. Though no major scratches, the mercury dime is a 1942 plain, nothing special, but something like that can make a teenager's day.
