My First Nugget

01 May 2011

I bought this detector late in 2010 as my first metal detector and after fussing with it a bit I decided to joined Nuggets from Down Under on one of their 3 day tours. Needless to say, I took holidays off work and travelled the 1300km's by car from Central Queensland to Mudgee for this tour and was hoping I would find at least 1 piece of gold. On the first day I found the odd bullet and small buckshot (bb size), but no gold. On the second day we attended a property and I started swinging away with my Minelab GP extreme when I got a signal over an old mullock heap. I scraped the top inch of soil away and ran the detector back over the area I initially received the signal, but it had gone. I ran the detector over the scrapings to get a small signal still in the pile, but convinced myself it was ground noise. I kicked the dirt back up to where I had scraped it out. However curiosity got the better of me so I ran the coil back of the dirt that I had just kicked up. Well the detector screamed at me and I thought I had better investigate this further. I pinpointed the target perfectly and got it in my first handful of dirt. After separating the pile I was left with 5 small 'stones' in my hand. It was the second stone that I had checked and the spit test confirmed it was gold as a small amount was showing through this ironstone covered specimen. Back at the camp, we weighed this for 0.42g. I can't describe how excited I was finding my first gold nugget with no help from the instructors. I didn't care if it was 0.2g or 10g. I got my first gold nugget. No one could wipe the smile off my face for the rest of the day. Overall, I ended up with 3 little nuggets from the trip. Jason Large – QLD, AUS
