My Big Mouth

23 Aug 2022

Someday I will learn to keep my big mouth shut! Well maybe, but after 68 years I’m still shooting off my mouth and shooting myself in the foot I still haven’t learned. I recently reconnected with an old high school friend, and as luck would have it a fellow detectorist. We each have about 15 years of experience the main difference being that he has always run a Minelab and for most of my detecting life I ran a Whites. But, when Whites went out of business about the same time I reconnected with John, I stepped up to the Minelab CTX 3030. I did this less than a year ago and yes, just had to go one up on my friend John. Although I don’t think anyone could pry that E-Trac away from John. He knows it up one side and down the other. That brings me to our outings. Over the past few months every time we go out John has outhunted me. He consistently finds more silver, weaties and clad than I do. I was however slowly gaining on him. As I learned more and more about my machine my finds increased. But I was getting frustrated with always always being outhunted. In my frustration I commented that one of these days I was going to plant a nice silver coin and pretend to find it, just to show you up”…………..me and my big mouth. On our next outing I was doing my usual. Apparently, I was walking past targets big time. I had a hand full of dimes, a couple of nickels and a bunch of pennies. Nothing to brag about as they were all modern dates. John was finding quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies and a few weaties. Finally, it’s time to go and John has once again outdone me. I’m headed back to the truck and I’m swinging over the dirt road we drove in on. Bang! I get a good solid hit. I look down and I can see the outline of a dime in the dirt. As I pick it up, I notice it looks different from what I’ve been finding and I mumble to myself “Nuts! A Canadian Dime.”. Then I got to looking at it and its and 1877 S seated liberty. It took a while but I’d did convince John that this wasn’t a plant. On the way home I did comment to John that I was unhappy because I hadn’t found and quarters. He then told me to do something atomically impossible.
