My 1787 Conn 1/2 cent

28 Mar 2017

I was hired to rehab a fixer upper that use to be a mill in the 1700s. While working on the foundation I found a lot of small digging by hand. Later in the day, I asked the owner if I could detect around the property. I decided to start at the front of the house and work my way around. A few feet and all I found was square nail and many smalls of all kinds when I got to the front steps my detector going off at the base of the front granite steps.

First hit was at the bottom stair and took a shovel full and about six inches down I found what I thought was a large copper Indian Head penny. Not thinking about it I continued to detect the property. Getting home I checked out the coins I found and I almost fell over backwards when I saw the 1787 on the back. Shocked to say the least.

I researched the coin and it was a 1787 Conn 1/2 cent. Some five years before the US mint was even formed. To say I was excited.... Oh boy I was on cloud nine. The oldest fine I ever dug up. One happy detector, thank you Minelab for making my GPX. Thank you thank you thank you, sincerely Jay the happy detector.

Jay - MN, USA.
