Miners Merc Ball

24 Oct 2019

I was out detecting in a yard of an 1860’s home near a large scale Gold mine. The home belonged to the head engineer of the mine. We had found a seated half dime, and a shield nickel along with many wheat pennies. I hear a scratchy 18 signal on the EQUINOX so I dig, thinking it’ll be junk, and pull out a super heavy shiny silver coloured ball. It was too heavy to be aluminium and too low on the VDI to be silver so I kept it not knowing what to expect. After researching what it could be I decided to throw a gold earring in with it and low and behold the silver melts and transfers to the earring. So now I know I have at least a ball of mercury. Next day I burn off the 49 gram ball of mercury to reveal the 21 gram ball of 22k gold dust. Coolest find I’ve ever dug. I’ll be back to that yard to look for more shiny silvery balls!
